Eastern Spring Beauty – Claytonia viginica

Claytonia caroliniana Michx_4

SPRING BEAUTY (Claytonia virginica.)   belongs to the  Purslane family

Spring Beauty has a fitting name.  It is a beautiful little flower which is one of the first to bloom.  It is tiny!  Only 3-4 inches tall, spring beauty grows in rich woodland slopes.

Pushing its way up through snow and rain soaked leaves, its pink candy cane striped flowers on delicate thread-thin stalks, its long thin leaves emerging from stems somewhat distant the flower, it is a rambling little plant which grows out of a corm.  If you are lucky enough to have the plant growing on your property and are careful about locating the corm and keeping the plant in one piece, they don’t mind being transplanted!  But, don’t get too attached…one of the spring ephemerals, it will be gone by summer.
